WHO SPEAKS
FOR EARTH
IMAGINE - a world without war, hunger, poverty, injustice, inequality and plutocracy
INTRODUCTION
The Earth has orbited the sun for the last 4.5 billion years—that’s nearly a million times longer than recorded human history. Put another way, human history is like “thirty-five seconds” in planetary time. If you blinked during that thirty-fifth second you likely missed our greatest work. We expanded our realm beyond our home planet, we walked on the moon, and we sent our machines to Mars. We built an invisible web around the world to connect this planet’s people together. We built tiny machines with parts you and I can’t even see and a “Large Hadron Collider” few can even fathom—all in one blink! Now we can end poverty and hunger forever, and soon our machines will take over most of our remaining labor. Finally we will be truly free, living in a world of abundance, free to decide how we live our lives, what we study and learn, when we work and play, and how we share our time.

Really?
This wistful “Great Transition” is technically possible. An inspirational and hopeful future for everyone is within our grasp; however, there is a catch. Our civilization is distracted and confused, utterly unprepared to embrace the legacy we have earned and the future we deserve. Engulfed in fear, we are surrounded by institutional corruption, social division, terrorism in our schools, churches, and shopping malls, and violence in our streets—not to mention the existential threats of global warming and nuclear holocaust. Meanwhile, our ineffectual government is in shambles, the people ostensibly representing us squabble over minutiae, and we keep working and waiting for something to happen. The United States…the richest nation on Earth…the long-heralded “leader” of the free world now leads all developed nations as a “Culture-in-decline,” scoring near last—most often dead last—on every social and economic metric that that one could pose.
Unfortunately, dystopian diatribes like this are much like the weather – we talk about our problems all of the time, but no one ever does anything about them. And how can we? Just like the weather, these societal fractures are seemingly out of our control, nebulous, and chaotic. Unlike the weather, however, they are not naturally occurring. Born of our own creation, they need human solutions.

Where do we begin?

The primary goal of Who Speaks for Earth is to spotlight the technically obvious, but universally-ignored common thread running through every socially-oppressive, racially-divisive, and environmentally-destructive issue in the world today. Economics is central to this thread. However, whereas most of us think that economics is exclusively about money, I make the case that economics is really about everything above, beyond and including money. In this book, we will connect the dots, reveal the path and follow the money to show that human civilization is suffering from a self-imposed and unnecessary structural disorder. Our global economic system is actually a disease that is caustic to our planet, threatens our survival, favors the rich, breeds inequality and enslaves the masses. It has made our civilization sick and entrapped us in a state of self-replicating mass delusion. As will be explained, this deeply-embedded, hidden and ultimately fatal disorder has been propagated by the principles of scarcity and competition—false and faulty assumptions, which lie at the heart of an outdated economic paradigm. If we wish to have a healthy society, we cannot remain pitted against each other by an institutionalized system’s disorder.
“We will never have a healthy society if we tend only to the symptoms of our affliction.” —E J Parker
