ABOUT THE TITLE
Who speaks for Earth? This is a provocative question with timeless implications. In 1973, seven select, internationally-respected global citizens summarized their views on the environment for the United Nations in a book titled Who Speaks For Earth? The intent of the publication was to serve as a guide for objective decision-making. Objective decision-making indeed—along with “objective sense-making,” a dire need in the world today.
Seven years later Carl Sagan immortalized this title, adopting it as the title of the final episode of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, the most widely watched series in the history of American public television at the time. Sagan’s many messages throughout his Cosmos journey were inspirational, at other times deeply foreboding. In his series finale Sagan left us with his answer to who speaks for Earth? His answer was simple—we do.
Sagan’s words still stand today, not only as a challenge, but as prophecy. It is becoming increasingly clear that this century will be one of resolution. The citizens of Earth will decide whether to embrace science as set forth by the laws of nature and thrive in harmony with their planet, or we’ll stubbornly stick to outdated institutionalized belief, old paradigms that are clearly no longer working.
The focus of my book is not climate change, nuclear proliferation, runaway inequality, or any of the many other top-of-mind threats to human wellbeing. These issues are critically important, and some of them do threaten our very survival. However, these problems are only symptoms of a much deeper issue. It will be shown that the root cause underlying all of these symptoms is traceable to the systemic malfunction of our market-based economic paradigm. This is a global disorder; all of humanity is suffering from a common systemic malfunction. Rest assured, we will not be delving into or trying to analyze any of the complex macro-dynamics of modern economics such as depressions, recessions, housing bubbles, or government shutdowns over the debt ceiling. These topics are also merely symptoms, and they are irrelevant to understanding the underlying root issues. The only lesson we might glean from these disruptive behavioral patterns is that they occur much too frequently and they have no place in what should be our life-support system. It will become clear that this scheme, which has been forced upon us without our permission, is so complex and obscure that the general public has virtually no chance of ever understanding it. This, despite the fact that the very survival of human civilization remains locked in its grasp. This economic religion is humanity’s greatest threat. It’s held in place by deception, false propaganda, obfuscation and ignorance. The clock is ticking.
